Fluor Consortium Wins Freeway Bid

A consortium led by global engineering firm Fluor has won a contract to design, build and maintain the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway on behalf of the Arizona Department of Transportation, or ADOT.

The project will be developed under Arizona’s public-private-partnership statute and will be the first design-build-maintain project awarded by ADOT.

Alongside Fluor, the Connect 202 Partners consortium that will carry out the project includes Granite Construction, Ames Construction, Parsons Brinckerhof and DBi Services as the joint maintenance partner.

“Working in partnership with ADOT to reach contract award is a significant milestone to move this important project forward. We are pleased Connect 202 Partners was awarded the project as we believe our team provides the most innovative, safe and cost effective approach for our client ADOT,” said Walter J. Lewis, III, Connect 202 Partners project director.

The project will involve creation of 22 miles of new highway with four lanes in each direction. This will include three general-use lanes and one high-occupancy vehicle, or HOV, lane. Construction is due to start in 2016 and the highway is scheduled to open in 2020. The consortium will maintain the highway for 30 years with oversight from ADOT.

Fluor provides engineering, procurement and construction expertise worldwide via a staff of 44,000 globally.
